Review: Roberts MP43 Sound 43 CD/DAB/FM Digital Sound System with Dock for iPod

Roberts is a sturdy British radio brand that never fails to conjure up images of listening to the BBC Radio Four shipping forecast while sipping cocoa by the range in your grandmother's kitchen.

But Roberts has cleverly reinvented itself over the past decade, combining its traditional reputation for providing quality radio equipment with a sleek, modern and innovative image. The Roberts MP43 Sound 43 CD/DAB/FM Digital Sound System combines the best of both worlds in the competitive micro sound system market.

One of the things we love about the Roberts MP43 is its versatility. With two 7W stereo speakers, the sound system is large enough to provide enough audio punch if you want to play music in the background at a dinner party and it's physically small enough to fit on your bedside table if you want to upgrade your radio alarm clock to something more modern.

Impressive and Versatile Audio Functions

The Roberts MP43 is one of the few micro sound systems on the market that provides every audio function: CD, DAB radio, FM radio, Apple iPod dock and line-in jack for connecting other media players. The CD player also handles CD-R and CD-RW files so that you can play MP3 and WMA audio files. The MP43 comes with the full range of iPod dock inserts to accommodate all variations of the Apple media device, from the iPod Nano to the iPod Touch and iPhone.

The only function that's missing from the Roberts MP43 is the ability to connect to your home Wi-Fi network and access the media files on your PC. However, with easy transfer to your iPod or a CD this isn't really a major concern.

Sound Quality

The Roberts MP43 offers the sort of deep, rich sound for which the company has become famous, and you can further tweak the audio with the bass and treble controls and the six position equaliser.

DAB and FM Reception

A generously-sized, retractable telescopic aerial pulls in a great signal from DAB and FM radio stations. We live in a very poor radio reception area, but could still get all available DAB and FM stations without irritating digital drop-outs on DAB or hiss on FM stations.

Station Presets and Alarm

The Roberts MP43 also provides 10 station presets for DAB and a further 10 station presets for FM, allowing you to save and find your favorite radio stations swiftly. Wake up with the MP43's humane buzzer alarm system that gently increases the volume rather than waking you up with a full-on blast of sound as soon as it's time to get up. Alternatively, set the alarm to play your favorite radio station, CD tracks or iPod music.

Style and Appearance

Roberts has always managed to produce attractive-looking radios and audio devices and the MP43 is no exception. We chose the sleek, piano black model. For equipment that cost under £200, the Roberts MP43 looks far more stylish and high-end than similarly priced micro-sound systems.
