Many Facebook users will welcome this move, because the Limited Profile feature was fiddly to set up and it took a lot of time to configure settings for each friend or contact.
The Facebook Limited Profile feature has been superceded by the Restricted List, which makes it much easier to automatically block people from seeing the majority of your Facebook contact.
Adding a friend to the Restricted List hides all your content, including photos, status updates, posts and comment, apart from posts in which you specifically tag the individual or posts that you mark as public with the audience selector tool. Setting up the Restricted List is a relatively straightforward process that takes only a few minutes to complete.

Step-by-Step Guide to Facebook's Restricted List in Your Privacy Settings
- Go to your Facebook home page and select the Friends button (it used to be called Lists) in the left sidebar menu.
- On the Friends page, click the Restricted List option toward the bottom of the page. It's labeled with an icon that includes a red exclamation mark, so the Restricted List is pretty easy to find.
- Enter the name of the friend that you want to restrict in the + Add Friends To This List input field. Facebook automatically suggests friends' names as you start to type, so there's no need to type the whole name. Do this for each friend that you want to add to the list.

ReplyDeleteIll make this easy for all... If your profile is marked "private"(meaning the public cannot see your profile,newsfeed or pics). Now If you mark a friend as "restricted" while the profile is private,your profile will look the same to them as a person thats not your friend and your profile will look private to them too,(they will know you've restricted them). A person marked restricted can only see post and pictures that you've marked "public" (with the earth/world icon) but they cannot comment or like the post unless you tag them in the post,only then can they see and comment on the post. If you want a restricted person to see your profile but not let them see posts,comment or newsfeed then you need to make your profile "public" they still won't see your newsfeed or pics marked friends or f of friends only,again unless you tag them in your pics/posts or newsfeed,they can post on your timeline though if your profile is "public" or youre tagged in their post,unless you've applied "review posts you're tagged in before posting on your timeline".
DeleteHi, adding Bob to your restricted list means he can only see posts that you choose to make public with the inline audience selector tool in the bottom right of the post pane. If you've restricted Bob, and your status update is not set to "public" he won't be able to see the post or comments made by others.

i added someone to my restricted list, but when i view as that person, i find that she's still able to view my recent activity (namely, my comments to some of my friends' photos and links). why is that so? they are not mutual friends.

ReplyDeleteThanks for the post. I have just started to use the Restricted List but sometimes, there are posts that I would like to let some of these restricted friends view. So, I went to take them off the list before publishing the post. Now, I am wondering, does that then allow these friends to see my earlier posts (which I have posted when they are on the restricted list)? If I can't find this out, then I will probably sort friends into different audience groups instead. I know I can tagged these people too, but I don't want to as it will appears I post specifically for them.
ReplyDeleteHi, you can restrict access to some previous Facebook posts individually by clicking the "Share" link below the post and then choosing the audience from the inline audience selector tool in the top right of the post pane. However, Facebook doesn't offer this facility for all previous posts irritatingly.
DeleteYou can, however, restrict access when you create a new post with the inline audience selector tool. Sometimes, the safest way is to completely remove the previous post and then post it again and restrict access with the audience selector tool. It's not ideal but it is a workaround!
Sorry for the double-post but just to clarify, use the "Custom" option in the selector tool to share a post with selected individuals but restrict it from general view.
DeleteIs there a way to import people directly into the restricted list? Otherwise they will for example the first hours that we are Friends, be able to see all of the infos. I would for example like to invite my work contacts directly into the restricted list. Any ideas?
ReplyDeleteAs far as I know, the only way to add to the restricted list is to add them by name in the Add Friend box on the Facebook Lists page. You can first import a separate contact list into Facebook by using the tools at facebook.com/find-friends.
DeleteYou can try my method. But I don't know if it really works.
Delete1. Make a list of friends that can view anything in your page (just like the public setting, but are customized. Not very public, because you select the specific person in this list), and name it
anything as you wish.
2. Start posting anything now and then with this settings: Visible - set to "your newly made list", Hide - set to "restricted"
3. This way probably gonna make any person you befriended will not see most of the private activities as soon as they became your friend, only if you set something as "public", then he/she can view it...

ReplyDeleteNo, unfortunately Facebook doesn't offer this function (which is a PITA) so you'll need to add each friend to the Restricted List separately. If you don't want to do this you can change the settings on the Facebook list you've already created to control what people on this Facebook list can see. Click the "Manage List" button on the list's home page, then deselect and untick the options under "Updates to Show."

DeleteI am confused about this Restricted List in that it is supposed to make it where they can see your Public posts - yet they can't comment on them from what I've seen. I also cannot find any preference area in which I can change who can comment on my Public posts, so it must be within the Restricted List, and I have no idea where to change that. This is really confusing and a bit disturbing, since I post public information just for them, and they can't comment at all. Thanks so much if you can give any insight into fixing this. :)
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure if this is a bug or intentional. I suspect people on the Facebook Restricted List are barred from commenting on any content, although they can see public posts. I'd try taking them off the restricted list -- which seems to be confusing many people -- and creating a standard list. You can control what people on the new list see by clicking the "Manage List" button. Might be worth a try!

ReplyDeleteNo, you won't need to do this. The Facebook Restricted List transfers across when you move to the Timeline profile.

ReplyDeleteRestricted List blocks anyone on it from seeing anything other than content, including pics, that you have marked as "public." You may need to check the settings for your About Me, etc. If in doubt, use the "View As" tool from your profile page to see your profile exactly as each of your friends sees it.

Hi, people on your Facebook Restricted List can see only content marked as 'public' or content in which they have been tagged. So you can set a photo or album to 'friends of friends' without the Restricted List friend seeing it.

ReplyDeleteUnderstandable. Each Facebook user's ticker only shows the items that he is allowed to see by others. So people on your Facebook Restricted List won't see your activity on their tickers.

ReplyDeleteYes they can; the restricted list controls what they see on your wall it doesn't stop them from posting on your wall. To block friends from posting on your wall, go to Privacy Settings > Timeline and Tagging > Edit Settings > Who Can Post on Your Timeline and click the audience selector button. Alternatively, just hide any of their posts.

ReplyDeleteYou don't. But you can get a pretty good idea if you can't see a load of their content and all the content you can see on their FB page is public.
DeleteI tested the Restricted List by placing "Mary" in the Restricted List BUT she was also in my "Close Friends" list - which I did not remove. When I asked Mary what she could see, she could NOT see anything on the PC, but on the Mobile app, she could still see EVERYthing (as my "Close Friends" could). I then removed her from the "Close Friends" list, and it worked as it should.

DeleteNeed one clarification. Lets assume Bob and John are friends and Tim is Bob's friend but not friends with John. Now, Bob has added John to his restricted list. Therefore John is not able to see Bob's updates. To verify this, John views Tim's profile. Since John is not friends with Tim, he can only see his public updates. The question here is - Will John be able to see on Tim's page if Bob has commented or liked any of his posts? Or does the restricted list block that too and even if John clicks on the list of people who have liked a public post posted by Tim, he won't be able to see whether Bob has liked or commented?
ReplyDeleteYour comments and likes are only visible to the people who can see the original Facebook post. John should therefore be able to see Bob's comments and likes on Tim's public posts. Bob would need to block John completely to prevent this.

ReplyDeleteThe restricted option applies only to the person restricted. If you don't want their friends seeing your posts, change your post privacy settings from "Public" or "Friends of Friends" to just "Friends" or a custom setting.

ReplyDeleteIt won't appear in their newsfeeds or tickers if they haven't liked the FB page, but they probably would be able to see your comment if they looked at the page because the comment will have a "public" share setting.

ReplyDeleteI have never come across this before. If their names begin with "R" then you may just be seeing the auto-fill option for the Restricted List in the drop-down pane. If not, it's a new one on me. Feel free to post a link to a screenshot and I'll take a look!

I have a friend who I think put me on her restricted list on facebook because when I go to her wall all I see are my posts/pictures I've posted on her wall or things that she's made public. I don't see posts from her or any of her other friends! Does this mean that she's added me to her restricted list?

ReplyDeleteYes, other users report this as one of the side-effects of being placed on a Facebook restricted list. It's curious, though, that FB should stop your comments on a public post that the poster permitted you to see. It may be a bug rather than intentional.

ReplyDeleteSure, go to your FB home page. Click "Friends" in the left sidebar menu. Select "Restricted" in the lists screen to open the list. Click the "See All" link in the On This List section in the top right. Hover your mouse over the thumbnail of the friend you want to remove and then click the "X" button. Click the "Finish" button to complete the procedure.

Would it make sense to have the same person on a FRIENDS list AND the RESTRICTED LIST? My logic is that they will be able to see my page as anyone on my FRIEND page does but sometimes there are posts visible to "anyone except those on Restricted list" but now I am doubtful if that might get overlooked on account of them being on my FRIENDS list as well? ReplyDeleteHi, very good question. Without testing it specifically, I'd say that even in this situation your friend wouldn't be able to see content shared in that way while on the restricted list. There is a workaround, though. Anyone on the restricted list will still see your posts if you tag that person in the post, so if you want a friend on the list to see a specific post, tag them in it.
DeleteThis is not a good work-around. Example: I want to post a general status that I'm moving to another state. I set the audience to 'Friends', but I want some (or all) of my restricted contacts to also see this post. I will absolutely NOT want to make this post Public. And if I tag these restricted friends (who aren't close friends), it would look very odd to them and to everyone else.
DeleteUnderstood, but whether it is good or not, it is the only workaround in the way that Facebook is currently setup. If you have people on your restricted list with whom you wish to share this type of content, consider taking them off and creating a new list with specific content restrictions.

Anyone can see the posts in an open group, both on the page and, potentially, in their news feeds so the likelihood is that your friends may see this even if they are on your restricted list. In short, the group determines the privacy level of the content and you should regard it as public content.

DeleteThe mutual friend won't see it in your news feed or on your own Timeline, but your other friend controls the settings on his own Timeline/news feed so the mutual friend might see it via this route.

ReplyDeleteHi Natasha, it's a one-way street, so they can still see your profile. The only way to change this is to also place them on your own restricted list.

ReplyDeleteI think FB retains the previous friend settings so you stay on the restricted list. If you block, unblock and then friend someone again, the settings revert to default so you wouldn't be on the RL in this scenario.

ReplyDeleteNo, you control the privacy/share settings on the FB content that you post. The only items that someone on your restricted list can see is content that you mark as public or in which you specifically tag them.
DeleteHowever, if you like or comment on a post/picture added by the mutual friend, the person on your restricted list maybe able to see this (depending on the mutual friend's own privacy/share settings).
i have an ex girlfriend with whom I share several mutual friends with. When I search her name on my android it shows that we have less mutual friends than what her page actually says. She did not defriend any of them. Does this mean she has placed some of our mutual friends on a restricted list?
ReplyDeleteNo, adding someone to a restricted list won't affect their mutual friend status on Facebook. I suspect the most likely cause is either the privacy settings or account status (deactivated?) of each individual mutual friend. That's a guess, though, and it could just be a good old-fashioned glitch.
DeleteETA: to check, click on each mutual friend in your friends list in Facebook (using a PC web browser) and see if any of them show as "Deactivated" -- more and more people seem to be doing this temporarily on Facebook.

ReplyDeleteIt depends on the tagger's privacy settings as they control these. You won't appear if that person chooses to share content only with his friends, but might if he selects "friends of friends" or "public" and the person whom you have restricted is specifically searching for photos in which you're tagged.

Oh okay but I'm alittle confused. I thought the restricted person can only see "public" posts, so if a person that tagged me selects "friends of friends" why would the restricted person still might be able to see it? Do you know of any way I can prevent tagged photos from appearing on my friend's newsfeed? I've already selected the setting that allows me to review tags before they appear on my profile but that setting is sort of useless since it doesn't prevent the tag from appearing on newsfeed. I know I can remove tags but it's a pain and if i'm not online at the time, people will still see it. Sorry if I seem obsessive about it lol, i'm just really into my privacy and I don't think facebook has a good option for this

DeleteThe restricted list only controls the content you share. So, if someone else has posted a photo and tagged you in it, that person's privacy/share settings apply to that content. However, it's very unlikely that this content will appear in your friend's newsfeed if he isn't friends with the person who posted the photo and tagged you in it. If the poster used the "friends" share setting, the other person also won't see it on the poster's Timeline or in Facebook searches for photos of you. However, if the poster used a "public" share setting, the person on your restricted list would be able to see this content on the poster's timeline and in a Facebook search for photos of you. (He may also be able to see it if the poster used the "friends of friends" share setting).
You are right, Facebook doesn't have good options for this situation (and many don't realize that this can even occur).
You have the following options:
* Untag yourself in the photo.
* Ask your friend to change the privacy setting of the photo to "Friends." (You can't do this yourself, you will have to ask the poster to change the setting.)
* Ask your friend to delete the content.
Personally, I don't allow any tagged photos of myself because it's so difficult to keep track of who can see them. The new graph search feature has made it much easier for people to find tagged content on Facebook, so I reject them all from the tag review screen.

I'm trying to put someone on the restricted list, but since they list me as a close friend, they still get to see all of my posts and get notifications every time I post. From a computer, mobile, anything. What can I do to remedy this?
ReplyDeleteAre you 100% sure they can? Your FB privacy settings should override their personal close friends list every time. If you're sure this is happening, report it to FB thru the Help Center>Report an Issue>Report a Bug.

ReplyDeleteLet me be more specific about what I am trying to accomplish. I want to post some pictures of my family on vacation. I do not want a few of my friends to see these specific vacation pictures. Instead of putting these friends on a restricted list (which is not ideal because they would not be able to see my vacation pictures OR any of the other pictures I post in the future), can I place these few friends on a list entitled "no vacation access" or something and then when I post my vacation album I could specify the album to be set to "friends" but not the "no vacation access" list? Is this even possible? It is is, if a mutual friend comments on a picture from the vacation album, would the "no vacation access" list people see that in their news feed? I know this is confusing.
DeleteA good example of why someone would want to hide this could be taking a vacation but not wanting to visit a nearby relative (avoiding hurt feelings) or maybe playing hookie from work and not wanting your boss to see that you were not sick etc.
Sorry for so many posts. I think I figured it out. You can create a "no vacation access" list and allow friends to see the album but not certain friends (no vacation access) via utilizing the Custom Privacy Settings for each album and selecting "Share this With" and "Do Not Share this With". However, my question still remains, if a friend that is not on the no vacation access list comments on my album, will my album/picture show up on the newsfeed of a mutual friend that is on the no vacation access list? In other words, is this custom setting for albums as good as the restricted setting?
DeleteHi, basically, if you use the "Custom" option in the audience selector tool for the album, or individual photos, only those people included/excluded in this will be able to see the photos.
DeleteThe best thing Facebook has came up with is the restricted option! I have some in-laws that are very nosey and start a lot of drama so My husband and I decided to restricted them. Now they only see what we want them to see (the things we make public). We have our settings set to friends only but every now and then I set certain stuff to public just so they can see it. This is great because I don't have to unrestricted them so they can see it.

ReplyDeleteYou should be okay. The restricted list trumps the family list in terms of privacy settings.

I wasted one hour adding few of my recently added friends on my restricted list, only later to discover that they never went on restricted list. I have done this 30-40 times now with no use. ReplyDeleteIt's working for me. Maybe a stupid question, but are you sure you're all using the correct Restricted List with the red bar icon? I ask because my old Limited Profile list still appears from way back and it's now just a standard custom list. Ensure everyone on your old, deprecated Limited Profile list is added to the official Restricted List.

ReplyDeleteYou will see posts from those on your restricted list as normal. Regarding the second part of your question, this depends on the permission you've assigned people and the settings of the group. Remember that Facebook wants you to share as much as possible.

I like to know if my friend put me in the restricted list. The person has pictures posted up but when i check it, lot of them are public and i see lot of ppl comment on it. I had read if you dont see ppl posting on the friends wall and only see public posts and updates from that person, u are most likely restricted. Thats what i figured.
ReplyDeleteHowever there is something here that doesn't really make sense. There are some photos of the person where it doesn't say public. It says friends and certain pictures are friends +. I also see their mobile uploads the audience says friends.
So if i was restricted how is this possible then? Could it mean i'm an acquaitance list? Because i read if you are on the restricted list, the only picture/posts you see from that person would be public posts and pictures. Thus if you aren't their friend, u could view those pictures. Pretty sure public posts you can't though.
So am i restricted or not? I had thought i had to be b/c i only see picture/posts when posted by them and most of them are public but some pictures/friends show FRIENDS and FRIENDS+. Does anyone have the answer to this then? I mean could it be im a restricted friend but they made certain posts/pictures allowed for me and certain ppl?
The thing is last time i recalled they many times say thank you for the bday wishes and then lot of ppl liked and commented on thier post. Im sure i could post on their wall as well. However... i dont see any happy birthday posts on their wall from their friends. I know 100 percent they have lot of freinds who post.
Basically many years ago, i saw every post/picture they posted and how ppl who post on their wall. Now only time someone post on the person wall is if my friend post a status or pictures. Thoughts on this? Im really confused here b/c i assume i had to be restricted but why do some photos of theirs show friends or friends+ and mobile uploads then? I then mobile uploads public ppl could see though right? But im sure friends you can't?
And i like to mention most importantly, there aren't any posts by other ppl on their wall UNLESS they post a message or status etc. I mean, could they make it where many friends... they wont see their wall except when they make a post or comment or post picture? If this is true, is it lot of friends they did this to or manually? However if thats the case... why do i see pictures that show available to friends then if im restrictive list...
I am on a friend's page as restricted. I have selected "get notifications" on this Pearson's page. Although I am restricted I got a notification my friend shared a link. When I viewed the link the friend shared the link to "friends" and not "worldwide". Why was I able to view this posting as a restricted friend?

If I view past posting of theirs that still show up, the setting of the posting is "friends". If I get put on the RL, should these postings disappear from my view?
